UPS Description of Operation

The Hitzinger Rotary Diesel UPS operation has been split into five sections to highlight the operational procedures,

Accelerate

  • Diesel engine Starts

  • Shut Down of the by-pass switch (Mains-synchronised)

Mains Operation

  • The choke provides the consumer‘s and the synchronous machine‘s mains power supply

  • Storage of the kinetic energy in the kinetic module

  • Synchronous machine provides un-fluctuating consumer‘s voltage and supply of reactive power

  • Filtering and balancing of upper harmonics and asymmetry

  • Supply of non-critical consumers directly via the mains, Distortion factor < 3%

Mains Power Failure

  • Mains power switch opens

  • KIN module provides the UPS load uninterruptedly

  • Start of the diesel engine

  • Acceleration until the rated speed is reached

  • When the rated speed is reached, the diesel engine provides the UPS supply and charges the KIN module (frequency drop ≤ 1%)

Mains Return

  • Re-synchronisation of the consumer load

  • Opening of the clutch

  • Switching off of the engine after determined cooling-off period (via engine fan or separated 2-stage electrical fan)

Disconnect

  • When Mains power is available, the main power switch closes

  • Diesel engine turns off

  • The choke provides the consumer‘s mains power supply

  • Synchronous machine provides un-fluctuating consumer‘s voltage and supply of reactive power

  • Supply of non-critical consumers directly via the mains, Distortion factor < 3%
